Cranial sacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique that works with the connection between the cranium (head) and the sacrum (pelvis).
The brain and spinal cord form a continuous system, with the spinal cord extending from the base of the skull down to the pelvis. Through subtle, precise touch, cranial sacral therapy works with this system to release tension and unwind deeply held neurological patterns.
The head—especially the occiput (base of the skull)—and the sacrum act together as a rhythmic pump.
This system helps circulate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) throughout the brain and spinal cord, supporting the health and function of your entire nervous system.
Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear, protective fluid that surrounds and cushions the brain and spinal cord.
It plays several important roles:
Protects the brain and spinal cord from impact
Delivers nutrients to the nervous system
Helps remove waste and toxins
Supports communication within the body
This fluid moves in gentle, wave-like rhythms along the spine.
The bones of the skull and sacrum help create a subtle pumping motion that generates these fluid waves.
When the system is functioning well, these waves move freely—supporting balance, communication, and overall nervous system regulation.
However, stress, injury, and emotional tension can create restrictions in the system. The connective tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord (called the dura mater) can become tight or “twisted,” and the natural rhythm of the fluid can become disrupted.
Cranial sacral therapy focuses on gently accessing and harmonizing this system.
Through light touch, we:
Release tension in the dura and surrounding tissues
Support the natural movement of cerebrospinal fluid
Restore balance to the cranial sacral rhythm
Help the nervous system shift into a more regulated, relaxed state
Rather than forcing change, this work allows the body to reorganize itself—often leading to deep relaxation, improved function, and a greater sense of ease.
Cranial sacral therapy is incredibly gentle, yet it works at a deep level of the nervous system.
By supporting the body’s natural rhythms, it helps create space for healing, integration, and lasting change.
